Low Back Pain

  • If you have low back pain, you are not alone.  Over 80% of people experience low back pain at some point in their lives.
  • Low back pain is often a disorder of the musculoskeletal system.  More sinister causes of low back pain include but are not limited to: kidney disorders, tumors, spondylarthritides, abdominal aortic aneurysms, or certain metabolic disorders.
  •  The low back, or lumbar spine, is comprised of 5 vertebrae (bones) stacked on top of each other.  In between these vertebrae lie fibrocartilage discs.  The discs act as shock absorbers as well as help protect the spinal cord and prevent the bones from rubbing on one another.  Nerves coming off the spinal cord exit through inter-vertebral foramina.  These nerves provide motor instructions to the muscles as well as bring back sensory information.  When the discs protrude and press on the nerves, intense pain is often felt.
  • Injuries, poor posture, overuse or weakness of back muscles, and old age are among the most common causes of back pain.
  • Effective treatments for low back pain range from simple stretches and exercises, to traction and spinal manipulation.  Acupuncture has also been shown to be highly effective in reducing low back pain.
